Bosque Chile Festival Flyer
Join the chile harvest celebration at the Bosque Chile Festival this Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th St. SW. The Bosque Chile Festival is a celebration of food, art and culture on the Rio Grande. This event will offer live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, beer, wine, an amateur salsa competition, agricultural workshops, chef demonstrations, kids’ activities and more.
Unser Boulevard
Bernalillo County will host a public meeting Aug. 23 to share the results of the recently completed Unser Boulevard sound study conducted between Paradise and Irving Boulevards. The purpose of the sound study was to determine if noise walls are needed to diminish the traffic noise levels along that stretch of the Unser corridor.

Fire Chief Chris Celaya has announced his intent to resign as chief of the Bernalillo County Fire Department effective Oct. 1, 2017. Celaya has been fire chief since May 4, 2015 and will now be returning to his home in El Paso, TX to be closer to his family, which includes two new grandchildren.

The Bernalillo County Commission amended conditions for the Level A Master Plan for the Santolina development on the West Side, which means developers and the county can move ahead in the planning process for the 13,000-acre planned community.

The county wants to warn drivers to be aware of cows and horses that can sometimes be on or near Deputy Dean Miera Drive, Shelly Drive and on the I-40 Frontage Road, all of which all lead to the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Bernalillo County responds to a U.S. Department of Justice letter to the City of Albuquerque regarding access to undocumented immigrants in detention facilities. Bernalillo County has an internal policy that addresses this issue. The Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 on March 14 to declare Bernalillo County an immigrant-friendly county that welcomes and encourages immigrants to live, work and study in the county and participate in community affairs.
Dental clinic
Bernalillo County is proud to sponsor this year’s Mission of Mercy, which will bring free basic dental care to New Mexico’s underserved adults and children this Sept. 22 and 23 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The county has allocated $45,000 plus in kind services to help provide more dental care to the people of New Mexico.
Animal Care Groundbreaking ceremony
Bernalillo County is building its first ever animal care and resource center to accommodate the growing needs for animal care in the county. This new animal care and resource center will be a 17,143 square foot facility and will include space for approximately 120 dogs and approximately 67 cats and there will be additional space for large animals, small mammals, birds, and reptiles.
Metropolitan Detention Center
Former Bernalillo County Undersheriff Greg Rees is switching uniforms to become the next chief of the Metropolitan Detention Center, effective Aug. 7. Rees has over 23 years of law enforcement experience, working his way up through the ranks at the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department – as deputy, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, chief deputy, and undersheriff for the past two years.
