Bird Ryders Sculpture Dedication and Ribbon-Cutting

Commissioner Wayne Johnson and community members dedicated a bronze sculpture, Bird Ryders, at a special ceremony on Tuesday, April 11 at the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico.

“It is the county’s hope that the strength and beauty conveyed in this sculpture will serve to inspire and empower those who come to the center,” says Commissioner Wayne Johnson. “Bernalillo County is honored to support the center and its mission, and to dedicate this sculpture toward that good.”

The metal sculpture is funded by Bernalillo County 1% for the Arts, which is a public art program that is financed by 1 percent of Bernalillo County general obligation bonds passed by voters every two years.

Representatives from the Rape Crisis Center reached out to the BernCo Arts Board to request a sculpture to beautify their public courtyard. In conjunction with the representatives from the Rape Crisis Center, the Arts Board selected “Bird Ryders” by artist Enrico Embroli. The sculpture consists of two cast bronze horses with birds on their back. The artist first crafted the sculptures and then cast them in bronze. Today the sculpture stands at the entrance of the Rape Crisis Center.

“On behalf of the Rape Crisis Center, we express gratitude for our positive partnership with Bernalillo County and thank internationally renowned artist, Enrico Embroli for installing his beautiful sculptures that symbolize freedom to so many of the people we see at the center,” says Executive Director Jim Harvey, Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico.
