New Year, New BernCo Open Space Events


Bernalillo County Open Space is launching its 2017 event season at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House this weekend with a “Tree Care and Pruning” workshop on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and a “Women of the Pajarito Mesa” presentation on Sunday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The Gutierrez-Hubbell House is located at 6029 Isleta Blvd. SW in the South Valley.

 On Saturday, participants can learn correct techniques for tree pruning, the best fruit trees for their landscape and proper planting guidelines at “Tree Care and Pruning,” featuring arborists Bryan Suhr and Graeme Davis. Hands-on pruning exercises will also be available. Space is limited to 50 participants.

 On Sunday, learn about Josefa Baca, Barbara Duran y Chavez and Juliana Gutierrez at “Women of the Pajarito Mesa,” featuring three women whose dynasties and legacies span over 200 years. The lecture will be presented by Henrietta Martinez Christmas.

  • Seniors 50 +who are members of the City of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs can register for adapted aquatics classes taught at the UNM Therapeutic Pool (92 degree water). Participants will be led through a series of range of motion exercises that will increase joint mobility and develop muscular strength. Transportation from Vista Grande is provided and leaves the center at 12:20. Space is limited. Class cost is donation of $8.   • Weekly crafts, outdoor activities, and experiments will be offered to deepen your discovery of the natural world. Each visitor can make a journal and crafts to take home. Activities are all correlated to school science standards making this a great opportunity for homeschoolers to learn, explore and play! Each month has a different topic.
