BernCo Commission Approves Funding for Two ABC Community School Initiatives

The County Commission approved two contracts for the Albuquerque Bernalillo County (ABC) Community Schools initiative Aug. 22. The two projects total $620,000 to hire and provide funding support for community school coordinators and school-based health center coordinators.

The first initiative is an approved five-year contract with Albuquerque Public Schools for the purpose of hiring three additional community school coordinators and to stabilize the funding of the current six community school coordinators. The funding amount is $420,000 on a yearly basis. It passed on a 2-1 vote with Commissioners Steven Michael Quezada and Maggie Hart Stebbins voting in favor and Commissioner Debbie O’Malley voting against. Commissioners Talbert and Johnson were absent.

The second initiative is an approved five-year contract with the University of New Mexico in the amount of $200,000 on an annual basis for the purpose of hiring staff in school-based health centers in designated community schools. The health coordinators will continue to develop the community school and their health centers with a special emphasis on family health. Three health coordinators will be hired for the school-based health centers located in Manzano and Highland High Schools and East San Jose Elementary School. It passed on a 3-0 vote with Commissioners O’Malley, Quezada and Hart Stebbins voting in favor of it. Commissioners Talbert and Johnson were absent.

“The school-based health center coordinators will address the growing behavioral health needs of our adolescents that we are witnessing,” says ABC Community School Partnership Executive Director Jose Munoz. “All of the coordinators serve as a bridge between the schools and our community.”

Bernalillo County is a founding member of the ABC Community School Partnership (ABC) that includes the City of Albuquerque and Albuquerque Public Schools. The purpose of ABC is help students to graduate ready for college, career, and life. The partner agencies accomplish this by growing and sustaining the number of community schools in which ABC coordinators are the key to development.

The funding comes from industrial revenue bonds issued prior to FY10 that are designated for the University of New Mexico Hospital and the ABC Community School Partnership.
