County Open Space offers a wide-variety of free public events, including seasonally based and property-specific workshops appropriate for all ages.


Naturalist Series - 2017 

This series presents thought-provoking and engaging topics focused on New Mexico's environment. Topics include rainwater harvesting, petroglyph history and the geology of the Rio Grande.

Family Fun - Spring

Weekly crafts, outdoor activities, and experiments will be offered to deepen your discovery of the natural world. 

Each visitor can make a journal and crafts to take home. Activities are all correlated to school science standards making this a great opportunity for homeschoolers to learn, explore and play! 

Each month has a different topic.

Backyard Farming: Spring Series 

This nationally-recognized program covers the basics needed to plan and design your home garden landscape focusing on sustainability, permaculture, and wise use of our limited natural resources.

Each workshop builds on information shared from previous classes and offers tools to assess your home landscape. Participants who attend all five sessions will receive a certificate and have a chance to win a free rain barrel and other giveaways.

All the workshops are from 9 a.m. – noon with an extended mentor hands-on project for interested participants who want practical experiences and do not mind getting their hands dirty.

History and Culture of New Mexico Series

Join Bernalillo County's Open Space, in conjunction with the Hubbell House Alliance, for an engaging series on New Mexico's history and culture. 

Events include workshops on medicinal plants, performances of Spanish music, a talk focusing on women of the Pajarito Mesa and more.

Four Seasons of Plant Wisdom
 
This four-part series led by herbalist and health practitioner Bernadette Torres will present what grows locally and how to use native plants for healing and wellness. Each workshop will prepare you for the upcoming season.

El Camino Real

El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro is the Royal Road stemming from Mexico City to New Mexico and was central to the settling of New Mexico beginning in 1598. Discover the rich history of hardships, conquests, and enchanting tales of this historic trail. This event is presented by Bernalillo County Open Space, the Hubbell House Alliance, the El Camino de Tierra Adentro Trails Site, El Camino Real Historic Trail Site, and members of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail Association.

East Mountain Interpretive Series

Tour BernCo's open space properties while learning about the history and environmental significance of the area. 

This series explores Carlito Springs, Ojito de San Antonio, and Sabino Canyon.

Outdoor Adventures

Join a park wide version of hide and seek, camouflage, deer and wolf, and other outdoor games .Learn the basic skills and tools for navigation using a map and compass. Learn how to become a weather spotter, or about the plight of the monarch butterfly. All these lessons and more are available at Bachechi Open Space.

  • Open gym basketball is available Wednesday nights and Saturday mid-mornings. The gym is open to ages 16 and up. Cost is $12 yearly membership fee. For more information, call (505) 314-0240.

  • Seniors 50 +who are members of the City of Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs can register for adapted aquatics classes taught at the UNM Therapeutic Pool (92 degree water). Participants will be led through a series of range of motion exercises that will increase joint mobility and develop muscular strength. Transportation from Vista Grande is provided and leaves the center at 12:20. Space is limited. Class cost is donation of $8. Register in person or over the phone at Palo Duro Sports and Fitness 880-2800 or Los Volcanes Fitness Center 839-3710 or North Domingo Baca Fitness Center at 764-6496.
