BernCo Commission Approves Construction Contracts for Public Safety Memorials

03/30/2017

The Board of County Commissioners has approved plans to begin construction of two Bernalillo County Public Safety Memorials, one across from the James McGrane, Jr. Public Safety Complex in Tijeras and the other within an existing City of Albuquerque park, just east of the APD John Carrillo Memorial Substation at 8201 Osuna Road NE.

The construction contracts for both projects were awarded to Vigil Contracting Service, Inc. who were the lowest, responsible and responsive bidders.

The cost for the McGrane project is $410,943. The memorial will consist of a twenty-foot diameter tile mosaic as the center piece of the memorial with adjacent seating, landscaping, walking path and lighting. This site requires significant site preparation and landscaping to the entire 0.50-acre piece of property.

The memorial will also include the installation of granite memorial tablets with the names of public safety officers in Bernalillo County that have fallen in the line of duty.

Construction is anticipated to take four months and will begin the second week of April with completion estimated to be the middle of August, 2017.

The Carrillo Substation project came in at $238,133. The memorial will consist of an 18-foot high granite obelisk as the center piece of the memorial with adjacent seating, landscaping and lighting. Because this memorial is being placed within an existing park, minimal landscaping is required.

The memorial will also include the installation of granite memorial tablets with the names of public safety officers in Bernalillo County that have fallen in the line of duty.

Construction is anticipated to take four months and will begin the second week of April with completion estimated to be the middle of August, 2017.

The board voted unanimously in favor of moving the projects forward during Tuesday’s County Commission meeting.
